I Know I'm Late Posting This

Of the handful of shows I did see at SXSW, this was by far the best. Pelican fucking destroyed! This clip isn't actually from the show I saw, but it rocks nonetheless.

It's been three years since the Beastie Boys released To the 5 Boroughs, which is still only half the time between the release of Boroughs and its immediate predecessor, Hello Nasty. The trio is, however, already hard at work on their next album, as Adam Yauch (aka MCA) revealed to Pitchfork in a recent interview.

Yauch says the Beasties are "focusing on playing instruments [and] not really working with drum machines and samples" on the record, which they are in the process of mixing. The album is currently untitled, but they hope to release it this spring.

Isaac Thinks He's Iggy

"Isaac Brock attempted to answer his own "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes" query in drastic fashion at a recent Modest Mouse show in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, according to several eyewitness reports. While performing the Moon and Antarctica standout at Ramkota Exhibit Hall on March 18, Brock allegedly began hitting himself in the face with his microphone, then proceeded to draw a knife and cut his own chest."

I thought Isaac was clean and sober now. This is not sober behavior. Isaac should leave this to the professionals, like Iggy Pop.

Prefuse 73 Double LP

Scott Herren, the Prefuse 73/Savath & Savalas/A Cloud Mireya mastermind, returns this spring with a Prefuse double-album, a new Savath LP, and even some trans-Pacific production work.

But first, the Prefuse double-disc. "It has been a joy to make, yet possibly the hardest," Herren told Pitchfork recently via e-mail. Of the two records, one contains "the next round of beats and madness," while on the other Prefuse took the beats in question and "notated [them] via cello, flute, clarinet, and voice into what some would consider 'modern classical' or heavily influenced by 'italian' soundtracks.

Herren's also gearing up to reveal the latest Savath & Savalas disc, which Anti- will tentatively release in June. Continue story here.

Best Band You've Never Heard

So I'm starting a new re-occurring post. This will be about bands that have little to no spotlight shone upon them. It's not necessarily for up-and-coming bands, because there are plenty of bands that have gone completely under the radar until their demise. That being said, this 1st edition will star "The God Machine" , who disbanded after bass player jimmy fernandez died from a brain tumor. The God Machine were able to make a great album beforehand though. "Scenes from the Second Storey" came out in 1993 on Fiction Records. If you own this record, then congratulations, you're getting closer to being as cool as me. This is a must-own record for your collection and looks as though (after some research) that it could be fairly hard to track down. You can listen to some tracks on their myspace and with a little perseverance I'm sure you'll track it down.

Told Ya So!

Ono Owns Up To Ruining John Lennon's Career

Well, she's not admitting to being an intentional saboteur, but Yoko did confess that her relationship with John came at a cost to their potential. Via Contact:

In a way, both John and I ruined our careers by getting together, though we weren't aware of it at the time. My initial reaction to rock music was, "Oh dear, how simple can you get?" At first I thought John would carry on with The Beatles and I would do my own things, but he felt it wasn't right that we were working separately, that the union we had might not last, because of the pressure of the world.

So she's implicitly saying that John's career would have been different (and better) had they never married. Fair to say that she's suggesting The Beatles may never have broken up if it wasn't for her "how simple can you get?" disposition?

If You Didn't Know Already ...

then now you do. Michael Franti & Spearhead play Stubb's this Saturday (March 3) here in Austin. And to top it off ...

"The City of Austin, Texas will proudly proclaim March 3rd “Michael Franti Power To The Peaceful Day” in conjunction with the Anti- recording artists’ performance at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q that day as part of its Yell Fire! Tour. A distinction typically offered to large non-profit organizations, Mayor Will Wynn and City Council Member Mike Martinez will recognize Franti’s efforts for peace with a presentation from the stage."
