Lou Reed To Keynote SXSW

The South By Southwest Music Conference and Film Festival are pleased to announce that Lou Reed will be the keynote speaker for 2008. Reed’s keynote will be held in conjunction with a screening of Julian Schnabel’s film “Lou Reed’s ‘Berlin,’” which documents a recent performance of the landmark 1973 album. Reed’s groundbreaking work with the Velvet Underground and subsequent solo work reverberate through the music world to this day. His music continues to explore themes and sounds in a singular style, staking new territory for rock and roll. Reed will speak at the Austin Convention Center on March 13 as the kickoff of the twenty-second annual SXSW.

Von Bondies Tour

The Von Bondies have announced a tour of North America, kicking off in Ann Arbor, MI on January 9.

The band recently completed the recording of their album ‘Love, Hate And Then There’s You’, which will be released next summer.

The album, which is the follow up to 2004’s ‘Pawn Shoppe Heart’, was produced by Rick Parke, Peter Katis and Butch Walker.

Meanwhile the band have released a four-song EP ‘We Are Kamikazes Aiming Straight For Your Heart’, available at their Myspace page and at the upcoming shows.

Another Band Rises From The Ashes ...

The ashes of Hot Snakes/Drive Like Jehu/Rocket From The Crypt that is. Hot Snakes were incredible and I'm not sure that this can live up to that, but here's hoping. The main thing keeping it from this, is that Rick won't be handling the vocals. John Reis has created this and it sounds like he will be doing the vocals.

"John Reis has also formed yet another new band. In addition to Reis, the currently unnamed group features the talents of Gar Wood (Hot Snakes, Beehive & the Barracudas), Jason Kourkounis (Hot Snakes, Mule, Delta 72), and Tommy Kitsos (CPC Gangbangs). The band will make its debut on March 25 with the release of its first album via Vagrant and Reis' own Swami Records. Then they'll hit the road."

Dub Trio's new album (Another Sound Is Dying) is coming out January 29! And it again features a track with vocals from Mike Patton.

"Given that their new album opens with a guitar riff that could melt lead—a theme, incidentally, that extends throughout Another Sound Is Dying—you’d be forgiven for wondering what connects Brookyln’s Dub Trio to the nearly 40-year-old Jamaican style that makes up half their name. The answer, you’ll find, comes just minutes later, as the riffs, riddims and raw power at the core of Dub Trio’s sound get chopped apart, bounced across speaker channels and charged with subsonic frequencies. This is dub as mixing-board art form, not as literal genre exercise, and it’s absolutely fugging massive.

Doves Working On New Album

Doves have completed eight tracks for their new album.

The band have been working on the follow-up to 2005's 'Some Cities' with Massive Attack producer Dan Austin.

Writing on their blog, the band explained: "We've done eight tracks. We will be recording another eight tracks so we still have some way to go. Again thanks for all your words of encouragement, it means a lot to us.

"The studio is a little farmhouse barn in Cheshire, we did some mixing in RAK studios... John Leckie has since moved on due to previous commitments... Co-production-wise, we've hooked up with an amazing up and coming producer, Dan Austin.

Downtown 81 Soundtrack

The life of Jean-Michel Basquiat, darling of New York's downtown art scene of the early 1980s, was the stuff of legend. In the nearly two decades since his death, he's been immortalized in print, on museum walls, and on film-- but Basquiat's light burned so brightly in his time, he all but starred in his own quasi-biopic back in 1981.

Downtown 81, a film loosely based on the Lower East Side art movement in which Basquiat loomed so large, stars Jean-Michel amidst a cast of characters plucked from the scene the film depicts. The film also featured quite a few bands and figures from the period, including Deborah Harry, James Chance, DNA, and Tuxedomoon. The latter three join Suicide, Liquid Liquid, Lydia Lunch, Blondie's Chris Stein, and Basquiat's own musical project Gray (which also included a young Vincent Gallo) on the soundtrack, due November 6 from Recall Records.

Once a month next year, teeny boutique toymakers UNKL will issue a series of limited-edition figurines inspired by the Ipecac Recordings roster. Yep, that Ipecac: The Mike Patton co-founded label with a bent for dumping disc after disc of weird-ass experimental punk/noize/sludge/rap on a gleefully suspecting public. And that UNKL, the people responsible for those Wilco figures. It is, to say the least, a strange pairing.

There is one releases per month, and they are in the order of the following picture ...

Still, these Ipecac toys are really nifty-looking, with a lot more personality (if a slightly higher chance of coming to life and murdering your face) than, say, a Kindercore set might. Each figure will be available individually in a limited edition of 500, with a new one arriving each month.

The Salt Mine Show

Now that their "Duluth Tour" is over, Queens of the Stone Age have to get their non-traditional touring kicks somehow. And since we already know they have 1.) a refined palate (see: their appearance on an upcoming holiday episode of chef Anthony Bourdain's Travel Channel show) and 2.) an affinity for all things rock (see: their music and the "Stone Age" in their name), the announcement that the band will play one mile underground in a former German salt mine next month seems just about perfect.

The mine is in Sondershausen, Germany (check out pictures here), and the show is on November 20. And the venue isn't the only special thing about the performance: Queens plan to unearth (I'm sorry) plenty of songs they have never before played live for the exclusive unplugged set.

Unfortunately, the show is only open to winners of various worldwide competitions (including some radio promotions), but the band has plenty of regular ol' dates as well, including a few more UK shows in February. Their next show is tomorrow night, October 27, in Las Vegas at the Vegoose festival.

Experimental Berliners Einstürzende Neubauten will release Alles Wieder Offen-- their 20 gazillionth album in a career that has spanned gazillions of years-- via their own Potomak label tomorrow (October 23) November 6 in the U.S. (it's already out in Europe).

The title of the record, the official public follow-up to 2004's Perpetuum Mobile, translates to "all open again," which refers to the fact that the band has taken almost all matters related to the album into its own hands.

The reason the phrase "official public" modifies the "follow-up" above is that Neubauten released over 10 albums since Perpetuum Mobile came out. These albums were self-released to subscribers to the band's website (creepily called Supporters), and the material on them ranged from piano compositions by Neubauten members to something a press release calls "the musical possibilities of ritualized wine consumption."

Many of these albums were conceived through alternative compositional techniques, and both these techniques and some of the material from these albums ended up on Alles Wieder Offen in one form or another.

R.I.P. Paul Raven

Paul Vincent Raven-- bassist for post-punk pioneers Killing Joke and, in more recent years, industrial elder statesmen Ministry-- was found dead Saturday, October 20 in a private home in a small French village on the border of Switzerland, near Geneva. According to initial reports, his death was the result of a heart attack.

The 46-year-old Raven was in the thick of a couple different musical projects at the time of his death. He was in Geneva to record with French band Treponem Pal, and he planned to release an album by Mob Research-- a collaboration with members of Warrior Soul and the Mission UK-- on Ministry leader Al Jourgensen's 13th Planet Records next year.

After Raven's death, Jourgensen released a statement saying, "I am in total shock. The world of music is a sadder, emptier place. Not only was Raven an extraordinary talent, but one of my closest dearest friends. Our condolences and prayers go to his immediate family. He will be truly missed by artists, musicians, and his fans the world over."

Swervedriver Plan '08 Tour

U.K. rock act Swervedriver will reunite for a worldwide 2008 tour after a nearly decade-long hiatus. Dates and other details have yet to be announced.

The group (vocalist/guitarist Adam Franklin, guitarist Jimmy Hartridge, bassist Steve George and drummer Jez) split on the heels of its 1998 album "99th Dream." Although it never enjoyed major commercial success in the U.S., Swervedriver was beloved by fans for its psychedelia-tinged rock sound, best heard on the 1993 album "Mezcal Head." (Note: Great album!)

Of late, Franklin has recorded with his band Toshack Highway and as a solo artist. He's presently in the midst of a solo outing in support of his recent album, "Bolts of Melody," and will perform tonight (Oct. 19) in Milwaukee.

On the new Compton, the second-to-none progenitor of West Coast gangsta rap is amended with five bonus tracks, including covers of choice Compton cuts from Snoop and C-Murder, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Mack 10, and WC, as well as a live rendition of "Compton's N the House" by Dre and MC Ren.

The Flaming Lips are eyeing next March's South by Southwest film festival for the release of their long-forthcoming feature film, Christmas on Mars, according to a recent Billboard.com interview with frontman Wayne Coyne.

"It is coming. In fact, it's better than ever. Because it's taken so long, we've become better filmmakers. There's better computer effects. I think it will be much better," Coyne said. Come to think of it, it makes sense that the Lips would need to build UFOs before traveling to Mars.

After Christmas on Mars' SXSW premiere, Coyne mentioned that the band plans to take the film on a tour of some sort. "I want the Flaming Lips audience to shape this. It'll be like our live show, which evolves as it goes. We'll show it to the audience and let them talk out there on message boards, and then maybe we'll take that and go back and change it and put it out there again and see what they think. It'll be a different experience than sitting at home and watching a DVD, for sure. I don't know if a lot of bands can do that, but the Flaming Lips sure can."

Currently, Christmas is in the final editing stage. The band is also transferring it to HD and adding "in-depth special effects."

Heeeeellllllooooo Brooklyn! Beastie Boys are going to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The creations of Dutch craftsman Yuri Landman. This guy has some crazyass guitar creations. On his website, the 34-year-old Landman describes himself as a "luthier specialized in experimental electric string-instruments". He builds some of the craziest, coolest guitars (and guitar-like things) we've ever seen. So far, he's built a guitar called the Moonlander for Lee Ranaldo and one called the Moodswinger for Aaron Hemphill. Continue here.

Rival Schools

This band was here and gone so fast it was easy to miss. They released an EP (Rival Schools United By Onelinedrawing) and a full-length album (United By Fate) in the same year (2001). "United By Fate" is a well-written album and one of my favorites. It's just a bummer when a band this good doesn't last.

A bit of history ...

"Born out of a hearty hardcore pedigree, the members of Rival Schools stepped to the plate with a phenomenal history and the qualities that would point towards an amazing future. Singer and guitarist Walter Schreifels began making waves as the guitarist for '80s hardcore pioneers Gorilla Biscuits and then went on to influence the entire post-hardcore movement with his influential work in Quicksand.

Combing the live intensity of Quicksand with more exploratory guitars and a newly melodic singing approach from Schreifels, Rival School took the urgency of the new metal trend and gave it a solid heart and a thoughtful mind. In an age when music was becoming dominated by completely unbelievable faux rock, the band disposed of clichés and focused on unbiased creativity."

We notice on your recordings that the vocals are mixed high and the instruments are often sparse. Does this change much in a live setting?

It's similar live. I like vocals to be high in the mix. It's less common now. Lots of bands let vocals get washed up by guitars.

You seem pretty committed to the idea of song as story on Robbers and Cowards. Might that change for your next record?

Words are being written on this very day that are relevant to this question. I think that the stories will still be there for album two. There is a song called "Golden Gate Jumpers," and another called "Dreams Old Men Dream," and both are stories.

The only Ramones museum in the world is being forced to close by their landlord.

The German-based museum currently occupies a place at Solmsstrasse faces the prospect of closing and not re-opening for an unknown period of time.

The museum contains 300 original band items, including unpublished photographs, signed posters, setlists and original T-shirts and other collectibles.

Museum spokesperson Florian Hayler said: "We would really like to find a place so we could have a bigger and better museum that will grow but at the moment we have nowhere to go."

Sigur Ros Fall Releases

Sigur Ros have announced that they will release a DVD and a double CD in the US on November 6.

The DVD titled 'Heima' (meaning "at home" or "homeland") features a series of free concerts the Icelandic band played in their homeland during summer 2006.

The double CD is titled 'Hvarf/Heim' (meaning "disappeared/home").

The first disc consists primarily of songs that the band feel have disappeared from their history because they were never released or recorded. They were played acoustically on the road during the summer tour.

The second disc contains live acoustic versions of tracks from all four Sigur Ros studio albums that were recorded in Iceland during summer 2006 and spring 2007.

Well, Dean and Gene are back with a promise of Latin prog, porn rock, and David Sanborn's sax on the less-than-food-y La Cucaracha, their first album in four years (and first for Rounder).

And how about the move to Rounder? Speaking for the band, Dean notes, "I always wanted to be on the same label that put out all those early George Thorogood records and now I am!" Good. The album was recorded "in a moldy 200 year-old farmhouse" in the boys' New Hope, PA stomping grounds. We're glad they haven't left the old 'hood and muse; though, the band will tour soon in support of the album. Dates to come!

It looks as though Foo Fighters could be back to true form. As reported earlier, they used the same producer they used on "Colour And The Shape" on the new album (Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace) they're dropping next month. And the new single (Pretender) sounds great. Oh and now they've done a cool cover of Arcade Fire's "Keep The Car Running" ...

Before kicking into "Keep The Car Running," Dave says:

I chose this song 'cause I listen to it every morning when I wake up and I figured it'd be a great song to do here 'cause I'm still waking and I figure can't wake up 'til I listen to this song so I might as well play it!

Turns out Mr. Grohl's a big Fire fan (recently telling RS "[Keep The Car Running] is a great fucking song").

Max Roach Has Left Us

Max Roach, the jazz drummer, composer, bandleader and educator whose approach to rhythm had a profound effect on music in the second half of the 20th century, died of an unspecified illness at his home in New York last night. He was 83 years old.

Born in Newland, North Carolina in 1924, Roach and his family settled in Brooklyn in the late 1920s. An early interest in music was encouraged, and he was drumming with bands by the age of ten. Roach is one of the last surviving members of the generation of musicians who came to prominence in New York in the 1940s and set in motion the influential jazz style that came to be known as bebop. Both Roach and fellow drummer Kenny Clarke were ubiquitous on the scene, which also included saxophonist Charlie Parker, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, and pianists Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, among others.

Sub Pop has signed the Gutter Twins, aka two of the alt-rock era's greatest frontmen, Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan.

Or, you could say, re-signed: Back in the early 90s, Sub Pop released two albums by Dulli's band the Afghan Whigs and a few singles by Lanegan's band Screaming Trees; Lanegan also released several solo albums on the label.

Most known for following the formative years of hip hop, skateboarding and American hardcore, photographer Glen E. Friedman will be putting out a brand new book titled Fugazi: Keep Your Eyes Open.

The new book will feature never-before-seen photos of the band and will come out September 3, twenty years to the day of Fugazi's first show. Speaking with Boing Boing, Friedman said, "Anyone who orders the book from now until the end of July will receive it postage paid and shipped within 2 weeks (that's at your door as much as a month before the official release)."

Well it's almost here. There's all kinds of stories coming out today regarding internet radio's deadline. The best place to follow them is on Wired.

The good news is .. "SoundExchange told webcasters and Congresspeople yesteday that his organization will not enforce the new royalty rates on Monday."

The bad news, in my opinion, is that a lot of the smaller stations (I.E. the best ones) will die out. I don't think these small guys are going to step up and start paying these bullshit higher rates.

"It has always been my dream to mix Steely Dan with No Means No," Dave Grohl tells Billboard of the eclectic sound of the sixth Foo Fighters album, tentatively titled "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace" and due Sept. 25 via RCA. "If anybody is going to do it, I'd love to be that guy."

Indeed, the 12-song set may throw some fans for a loop, as tracks like "Let It Die" and "Erase Replace" make drastic stylistic shifts in a matter of seconds. "There's four-piece rock band sh*t, but then there are songs where the middle sections turn into this mass orchestrated swarm and ridiculous time signatures," Grohl says of the new material.

White Chalk

PJ Harvey is to release a new album later this year.

The singer's seventh studio album 'White Chalk' will come out on September 24.

Harvey began work on the follow-up to 2004's 'Uh Huh Her', last year with producer Flood and John Parish, who also worked on her 'To Bring You My Love' and 'Is This Desire?' albums in 1995 and 1998 respectively.

The new album also features the singer's long term collaborators Eric Drew Feldman and Jim White from The Dirty Three.

On June 26, major webcasters such as Live365.com, Pandora.com, AccuRadio.com, and popular Santa Monica, California-based KCRW are among those who will silence their feeds for 24 hours in a show of solidarity against the upcoming July 15 rate hike on net radio royalties. Though regular programming will indeed be interrupted, the broadcasters won't simply be broadcasting silence; many stations will run intermittent PSAs detailing the current plight of net radio interspersed with ambient noise to give listeners an idea of what they'll be hearing should the royalty increases stand. KCRW is producing an hour-long program pleading the case of net radio entitled "D-Day for Webcasters," which they plan to loop all day Tuesday. Additional broadcasters will continue to be added to the roster of supporters for this day of silence.

It's been a while since we've heard from the Tomahawk camp, so here's some more info ...

Now a three piece, Tomahawk recorded Anonymous in two-parts. Duane Denison and John Stanier (Battles, Ex-Helmet) recorded guitars and drums (respectively) in Nashville while Mike Patton (Peeping Tom, Fantômas, Ex-Faith No More) added vocals and samples at Vulcan Studios in San Francisco.

Tomahawk’s third release, Anonymous, links the outfit with the Native American culture that bore its name. A thirteen-track album that reverentially explores and reinterprets the darker, more recessed ancestral music created by North America’s indigenous people, the title reflects the countless individuals who contributed to these songs but went un-credited throughout history.

"Beastie Boys have confirmed a string of US dates, including their first-ever show in Brooklyn, New York.

The band will play seven shows this summer in support of 'The Mix-Up' album, which comes out later this month,

The band will kick off their tour in Philadelphia and will play Boston before hitting New York for shows at the Central Park Summerstage and Brooklyn's McCarren Pool.

It seems being the voice of the reunited Stooges just wasn't enough for Iggy Pop. To achieve real fulfillment, Iggy needed to lend his vocal talents to a prepubescent cartoon version of resigned Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. And from the picture of him in the recording booth doing just that (at left), he apparently needed to do it shirtless-- like everything else he does.

Iggy brings Lil' Rummy to life on the new animated series "Lil' Bush", which will debut on Comedy Central on June 13. But he isn't the only celebrity lending his voice to the show. Wilco's Jeff Tweedy plays God, Frank Black plays the Devil, and Dave Grohl and Flea and Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers play themselves.

The Cult's new studio album, the first since 2001, is currently being recorded in London with producer Youth (Verve, Primal Scream), who will be adding final touches and mixing. The expected release date for the yet untitled album is September 25, 2007 and will be released in conjunction with The Cult's imprint label, New Wilderness.

The Cult, led by founding members vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, will embark on a series of European arena shows with rock legends The Who starting June 5th. The band will be adding headline dates and festival appearances along the route, building on the overwhelming reaction to their 2006 sell-out world tour. A U.S. headline tour will follow in the fall.

"Variety has announced that The Weinstein Company has acquired North American rights to the film. The deal became public knowledge yesterday hot off the heels from winning the award for top European film at Cannes.

Still no official date for release in the US, but our spies tell us it very well could be this fall."

Fudge Tunnel

To me this band is just a raw, straight-ahead rock band. Fudge Tunnel was all about the music. No frills. Their "Creep Diets" album is essential for your collection. There was a lot of energy put into their records and they sound great on 11!

A bit of history ...

"Nottingham, UK's Fudge Tunnel formed in 1989, influenced by the early Chicago/Big Black/Albini scene, albeit being noticeably heavier in the guitar department. Their debut 7" "Sex Mammoth" on London's Pigboy/Vinyl Solution label bagged the band a coveted 'single of the week' slot in the NME. A second release, the 'Sweet Sound Of Excess' 12" , again on the same label, cemented their reputation as one of the UK's best up-n-coming new artists. Earache signed the local band to an albums deal, and encouraged them to work with noted producer Colin Richardson to make the debut for the label, 'Hate Songs In E-Minor'."

"The 2007 ACL Fest lineup came into focus a bit earlier than expected this afternoon. Much like last year's online scavenger hunt, the folks at Charles Attal have decided to whet appetites with an ACL Crossword puzzle in this Thursday's Chronicle.
